Jomolhari Base Camp

This trek starts at Paro, following the Pachu (Paro river) upstream literally to its source passing through scattered hamlets and farmland, into a deep and richly forested valley, which further leads to high alpine pastures where yak herders graze their animals. Besides, Mt. Jomolhari and its adjoining range have impressed visitors as one of the most beautiful peaks. The trek offers a view of a great variety of Bhutanese landscape.

Itenerary

Day 1

Arrival at Paro airport. Receive by our guide and transfer to Paro town. After lunch visit Paro Dzong. Museum, walk down to foot bridge, watch archery game and free time around Paro Town. Overnight in Paro hotel.

Day 2

Day hike for the day to Tiger's Nest, which would give a acclimatization as well some preparation for the trek from next day. The hike takes about 6-7 hours, one of the most sacred sites in Bhutan. after lunch, visit old temple at Kichu, and back to hotel. Overnight at Paro.

Day 3

After breakfast in hotel, drive to Drukgyel Dzong and from there further drive through feeder road till Shana(2890m), where need to get checked at army check point. From the army check point, the trek starts. Trek crew along with horses would be waiting. From Shana to night campsite at Shingkha rabse would take about 4-5 hours, walking through dense pine forest. Is easy walk for the day. You come across a small trail doversion to the left, which leads to Phari(way to Tibetan village). Take the right wider trail. Camping overnight beside Pachu, (3100m)

Day 4

Shingkha Rabse to Soi Thanthankha would be a little toughter walk for the day, the trail ascending crossing about 3560m, passing through dense pine forest. You happened to come across Yak herders(along with yaks) with and few villagers on the way. Soi Yaksa village, but you need to take left trail, from where the overnight camp site is about few hundreds meters ahead. Soi Thathankha(3575m)

Day 5

Soi Thangthaka to Jangothang is about 4-5 hours. can get clear view of Mt Jumolhari from the way, if the weather is clear. During summer time, Bhutan;s National flower-Blue Poppy could be located on the way. You will walk beside the stream, and later come across a small army unit, small village with few house and you will be approaching the final campsite. Can see Mt Jichu Drakey(6850m) and Tshering Gang(6526m) from the way, Overnight camp at Jangothang(4044m) where we have a wooden rest house.

Day 6

Day hike around the base camp could be done, with few options according to your like and capability. Can hike to the lake and do fishing towards the base of Jichu Drakey, or Take a hike to the right, for an hour or two from where one can get clear view of Mt Jumolhari and Kichu Drakey. Blue sheep, yaks and other wild animals could be located. Overnight at same site. Jangothang.

Day 7

Return way from Jangothang - Soi Thanthankha, via the same trail. The Soi Yaksa trail could be followed which is little tougher and need to climb higher pass on the way. The camping site for either trails, would be at Soi Thangthankha.

Day 8

Descend down the same way from Thangthankha to Shana(6-7 hours). Car will be waiting to pick you up and drive to Paro. Overnight in Hotel, Paro.

Day 9

Day excursion to Thimphu, an hour drive. Thimphu sightseeing - visiting Memorial chorten, Buddha Point, Zoo, Nunnery, Trashichhodzong, Craft market, art school, weaving center. Late in afternoon, drive back to Paro.

Day 10

After breakfast, drop to Paro airport for departure flight.
